Wetlands International Africa and the Institute of Environmental Sciences of University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, have on Wednesday April 23rd, 2014 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in relation with the forthcoming implementation of "Ecole Mangove", a new university course conceived by Wetlands International Africa in partnership with the United Nations University of Canada. The purpose is to contribute to skills training in the area of mangrove in the West African sub region.
''Our work history with you for the past years was not formal. However, this MoU will, from now on, formalize our collaboration'' said the Director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (ISE) at University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD). Mr Bienvenu Sambou added by saying that "our overall mission is to work to preserve the environment for the future generations".
Professor Serigne Amadou Ndiaye, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology who signed the MoU on behalf of UCAD, welcomed the formalized agreement between the two institutions. He said, the University will avail its experience and expertise to the "Ecole Mangrove" Course.
Ibrahima Thiam, the Regional Director of Wetlands International Africa said, "The signed MoU between WIA and ISE is a gateway to "Ecole Mangrove", the forthcoming university course on this resource. Mr Thiam added that ''Mangrove is an important ecosystem in West Africa. However, it is often abused despite conservation efforts. Since we have very few specialists in our skies, the development of this Course on Mangrove in West Africa, in collaboration with ISE, will train skills and be well trained manpower in the area of mangrove in the sub-region''.
The validation of the agreement between ISE and WIA took place in the Dakar (Senegal) based Africa Regional Office of Wetlands International and in a friendly atmosphere. The "Ecole Mangrove" project has been submitted to Mava. It was showcased as a "Side Event" by Wetlands International Africa and University of the United Nations during the 7th edition of the Coastal and Marine Forum PRCM from 24th to 29th November, 2013 in Dakar.
