Side event: Terrestrial Ecosystems with High Carbon Content

Presentations of state-of-the-art information about high-carbon terrestrial ecosystems by leading scientific and research institutions from the Russian Federation and Wetlands International.

SBSTA is currently discussing technical and scientific aspects regarding the assessment of emissions and removals of greenhouse gases in terrestrial ecosystems with high carbon content, such as steppe, peatlands and tundra.

Research and systematic observations on ecosystems with high carbon content enable a better understanding of the scale of human impact on such ecosystems and an estimation of their mitigation and adaptation potential.
Research on steppe, peatlands and tundra can also significantly contribute to filling the gaps in the global carbon balance assessment and to reduce its uncertainties.

The leading scientific and research institutions of the Russian Federation together with Wetlands International will present state-of-the-art information about high-carbon terrestrial ecosystems. Special consideration will be given to on-going greenhouse gas emission assessment and reduction projects for wetlands and tundra.
