African-Eurasian Waterbird Census (AEWC)

These pages keep you informed about developments in the African-Eurasian Waterbird Census, complementary waterbird monitoring schemes and relevant processes in the flyway. We provide this information for national coordinators, counters and all other interested parties.

The African-Eurasian Waterbird Census contributes to the International Waterbird Census in the African-Eurasian flyway. It has emerged from the merger of the former African Waterbird Census and the regional IWC scheme for Europe, North Africa and West Asia in 2011.  The census monitors the changes in the numbers and distributions of wintering waterbird populations at a flyway level.

The census forms part of a wider range of waterbird monitoring programmes coordinated by the Waterbird Monitoring Partnership in the flyway. It supports the implementation of international treaties aiming to sustain waterbird populations. These include the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the Agreement on the Conservation of  African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), the Convention on European Wildlife and Habitats and the Birds Directive of the European Union.
