We deeply regret to announce that our former Supervisory Council member and most appreciated partner, Paul Mafabi succumbed to COVID-19 on the age of 62. Paul was a pivotal figure on wetlands and poverty reduction, mainly in Africa.

Julie Mulonga, Director of Wetlands International Eastern Africa: “Mafabi was a great wetlands champion, not just at a continental level, but also globally. He gave of himself generously and with great passion. It would be almost impossible to measure his contribution and impact to the environment and the communities he served so diligently. We convey our deepest condolences and sympathy to his family, loved ones and the whole wetlands community. “

Tunde Ojei, Country Director for CIVIC’s Nigeria Program, partner of Wetlands International, worked closely with Paul over many years: “Paul was an icon on wetlands management – not just for Uganda but for Africa in general. He mentored many great wetland ecologists in the continent. He will always be remembered for his humility, sense of humor and passion for wetlands. He will be sorely missed. ”

Jane Madgwick, CEO of Wetlands International: “Paul was a humble man who worked tirelessly to improve the conditions for nature and people through wetlands. He was part of our Wetlands International family and taught us all a great deal. We extend our condolences to his family and will never forget his massive contribution to our cause. ”
