University Gaston Berger (UGB) of Saint-Louis (northern Senegal), on Monday August 17th, 2015 received sets of equipments graciously offered by Wetlands International Africa. The ceremony took place at the organization’s regional office, based in Dakar. This educational material is a contribution to the training of students of the 2nd University of the country. A highly appreciated gesture by the Institution.
With this gift, Wetlands International strengthens its collaboration with University Gaston Berger (UGB) of Saint Louis. The donation of equipment includes GPS handsets, compasses, telescopes, binoculars, tents and mattresses. All the donated material is for students who may need it in their field work. Through this symbolic gesture, the organization intends to contribute to the scientific training of these young knowledge seekers of the Sanar based university, distant by 10 km from Saint-Louis.
According to Mr. Ibrahima Thiam, Africa’s regional director for Wetlands International, his organisation intends to do more of such gestures. ”After this gift, we intend to train students in ecological and ornithological monitoring. Every year we jointly participate in the annual waterbirds census for Senegal and in our different countries of intervention. We can train them so they can play their part in the count and enhance their knowledge as part of their university course”.
In addition, Mr. Thiam stressed the alreading existing partnership agreement between Wetlands International Africa and the second University of Senegal and the effective presence of his organization in both the Ndiael Avifauna Special Reserve (RSAN) and the Djoudj National Park (PNOD) where it operates for years as typical models of collaboration to pursue.
”This support for the Gaston Berger University is not the first of its kind. I have already come to Wetlands International Africa’s headquarter on several occasions to receive donations. We therefore welcome these latest sets with pleasure. This material will be of a great contribution to the practical training of our students. University Gaston Berger organizes the 3rd edition of its eco-citizen camp in Gandiole (North) and Dionewar in the Saloum Islands (Central East) from 29th August to 17th September 2015. This set of Opticron branded equipment is timely Ms. Diouf concluded.
