Wetlands are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, regulate our climate, and sustain countless communities. Yet, despite their importance, wetlands globally continue to face destruction, with over 35% lost since the 1970s.
It’s time to reimagine our relationship with nature. The concept of Rights of Wetlands emphasises that wetlands, as living ecosystems, have the intrinsic right to exist, flourish, and regenerate. Recognising these rights is a transformative step toward aligning our actions with ecological realities and building a sustainable future.
Healthy wetlands cannot exist without respecting their right to:
- Exist in their natural location.
- Maintain sustainable hydrological and climatic conditions.
- Be free from pollution and degradation.
- Regenerate and restore naturally.
Healthy wetlands are essential to life on Earth, providing a wide range of ecosystem services including improving water quality, storing carbon, protecting against natural disasters, and providing valuable resources for local communities. Safeguarding and restoring of wetlands is essential for the well-being for both people and nature.
Let us take collective action to protect and restore these critical ecosystems. Recognising and implementing the Rights of Wetlands is not just an environmental priority—it is an ethical responsibility.
