We’re delighted to share this Lamu Mangrove Restoration Calendar Guide!
Lamu County boasts approximately 60% of Kenya’s mangroves, hosting eight of the nine species found nationwide. These wetland ecosystems are essential to the everyday lives of residents, supporting livelihoods and providing services like enhancing water quality, controlling erosion, regulating stream flows, storing carbon, and offering habitats for diverse wildlife. Therefore, striking a balance between conservation and sustainable use is crucial.
The Lamu Mangrove Restoration Calendar Guide transcends mere dates; it serves as an educational guide for all stakeholders and enthusiasts for conservation and restoration purposes. Organised by natural zonation—from the coastal Sonneratia alba to the inland Xylocarpus species—this calendar guide illustrates the life cycle from tree to seed, reinforcing ongoing restoration efforts in the Lamu Archipelago.
In collaboration with local, national and development partners, we have created this Guide through a rich tapestry of indigenous knowledge, scientific expertise, and invaluable local insights. We extend our gratitude to all partners for their dedication and shared vision.
