This video highlights the remarkable achievements and collaborative actions undertaken in five years to restore balance in the Ziway-Shalla sub-basin for water security. It’s a journey of determination, resilience, collaboration, governance, changed lives and hope.
In Ethiopia’s Central Rift Valley lies the Ziway-Shalla sub-basin. Spanning 15,000 square kilometres and supporting over 7 million people, this sub-basin was diminishing due to uncontrolled human activities. In 2019, a consortium comprising the local communities, Ethiopian Government, private sector and NGOs with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs Enterprise Agency (RVO) embarked on a pilot initiative embracing an integrated landscape approach to water resources management. The aim? To improve water usage, reduce recession of wetlands and enhance overall ecosystem health and human well-being and resilience.
